Enhanced CRB checks

Enhanced CRBs apply to roles involving a much greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults (compared to the Standard CRB check) especially where an employee would supervise, train, take care of, or be solely in charge of children or vulnerable adults. For example: medical professionals, teachers, and personal carers.

Enhanced CRB checks can also include an extra level of checks on the ISA Barred Lists. These lists contain the same information as the former POCA and POVA lists - one list contains all those who are barred from working with children and the other all those barred from working with vulnerable adults.

IMPORTANT - 15th June 2010 - The government has announced that the ISA Register and Vetting and Barring Scheme is to be put on hold until its review is complete. Although the scheme is halted whilst the Government undertakes its review, there are certain safeguarding regulations introduced in October 2009 that continue to apply.

Standard CRB checks

Standard CRB checks reveal spent and unspent convictions, warnings held on the Police National Computer, cautions, and reprimands.

Standard CRBs are not issued to people working with children or vulnerable adults. If an applicant does not meet the criteria for an Enhanced CRB then they can only have a Basic CRB. Standard CRBs are now for FSA Approved persons, solicitors and those who handle explosives.

Basic CRB checks

Basic CRBs are available for all types of employment and voluntary positions (except for those covered by the Standard and Enhanced CRB). A Basic CRB check reveals unspent convictions held on the Police National Computer. Basic CRB checks are not job-specific and are available for all UK residents.

CRB checks for Academy Status Schools

If you have registered your interest in becoming an Academy-status school, one of the many tasks facing you will be having to carry out CRB checks for your staff.

Your options include:

  1. Processing the CRB checks yourself;
  2. Asking your LEA or local council to process them;
  3. Appointing us as your CRB supplier.

1. Processing the CRB checks yourself is possible but you should be aware that you will need to process at least 100 CRB checks a year before the Criminal Records Bureau will permit you to register with them for that purpose. You would also have to pay the annual registration fee on top of the fees to complete the checks, but we suspect that you would prefer to use this time, effort and money on other teaching-related activities.

2. Asking your LEA or local council to process the CRBs is initially an attractive option if you have used them before and understand how it all works. However, it may not be so attractive an option when you realise that your LEA or local council will now have to charge you for that service. That charge may also be at above-market rates (and therefore deliver less value for money) because their systems may not be designed to process CRBs as efficiently as ours;

3. Appointing us to process the CRBs for you may be the most attractive option because we have an experienced team who are dedicated to managing CRB applications; and because we process hundreds of CRB checks every year we are able to pass on cost and time efficiencies as savings to you. Our CRB service includes identifying which CRB check is required, distributing the correct forms, checking the applications for accuracy and completeness (which is critical because the Criminal Records Bureau will automatically reject inaccurate or incomplete forms), and answering any questions that your applicants may have in a sensitive and professional manner.

The CRB process:

  1. We send out a CRB Disclosure Form to the client's HR department or directly to the applicant.
  2. Each applicant completes the form, returns it to us, and provides us with any relevant supporting documentation.
  3. We process the CRB check.
  4. We report the results of the CRB check to the client / applicant.
